return key
9.26.06
After a much-needed, doctor's-ordered, self-imposed, drug-induced hiatus, I'm back to updating the site. There is going to be a new weekly feature I'm calling In the News by Joe Levine. Joe will also be contributing sketches and whatnot. Check out the first installment of In The News here, and go to the writings section for a sketch by Joe.

I expanded on an idea that made me chuckle earlier today. Hope it has the same effect on you. There's a good chance I'll follow up on it. As always, check the writings section.

I was going over stuff I wrote for my blog in the past and I found something I really liked. Since it's the end of summer and most people probably didn't see it, I posted it here. Hope you enjoy.
Also, I've added a piece from AST friend Mo!, and a mix of songs I've been listening to under the Misc. section.

inspiration

Comedian Patton Oswalt was kind enough give us some great advice:
"It's very encouraging to think of writing as a series of risks, epiphanies, lightning flashes and sudden inspirations. But you'll discover something, and it's something you'll need to re-discover every day:
The only risk is not showing up. Because if you're not there, slogging through the day after day after day un-inspiring work of writing, then you won't be around when the lightning flashes hit you.
You do not get inspired and start writing.
You have to start writing, seemingly with no inspiration and direction, and only THEN will inspiration show up."

Slowly getting things together here. Not much as far as content for now. I posted a couple of things in the writing section. A few links are also up.
Submissions can be made by e-mailing the link in the contact button.
mission statement
7.27.06
What was I saying? Oh, yeah. Hello and welcome to Taking a Risk. This website was conceived out of boredom and necessity; boredom because right now I don’t have a job and have a lot of free time, and necessity because I couldn’t find an outlet like I needed on the net. Sure, there are message boards and blogs but those are not what I'm looking for.
I imagine this as a collective. A blend of writings, videos, thoughts, ideas, and whatever else falls under the creative comedic spectrum. If you have a sketch group and you’d like to post your videos for others to see, or if you’re a writer who’s been turned down by your favorite humor writing website numerous times, or even if you’ve got crappy video/audio of your four minute open mic set, this is the place for you. I’m recruiting for what I’d like to call a (it just popped into my head) “comedy militia”. We have a voice, and I believe there is an audience out there for us.
I’m a recent college graduate and although I’d like to get into comedy writing, I can’t just dive right in. Bills and loans are breathing down my neck like a creepy uncle. Right now I’m just looking for a job that my journalism degree can get me. If I land a job I won’t be “living the dream”, but I’m never going to let it die. And if this is as far as I ever get, at least people will see my work. I heard a guy on a local sports radio station the other night say that “life is about risks”. Four words have never hit me so hard. I need to take a risk. This website is part of the risk experiment.
Which brings us to here. If you’re intrigued by this mission statement, e-mail me. Join the weakest revolution ever conceived. I dare you.
